A fat-derived protein drives heart calcification, but a diabetes drug blocks this pathway through a newly discovered cardioprotective mechanism.

Visfatin, elevated in patients with high coronary artery calcification scores, drives vascular calcification via TLR4-mediated VSMC osteogenic transformation; empagliflozin suppresses this pathway via NF-κB inhibition. This work identifies a novel cardioprotective mechanism of SGLT2 inhibition relevant to metabolic cardiovascular disease.
