Pharmacological interventions for obesity in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review of GLP-1 receptor agonist efficacy and safety
Weight-loss drugs work safely in people with both obesity and inflammatory bowel disease, opening new treatment options for this complicated population.
This systematic review (7 studies, largest n=47,424) confirms that GLP-1 RAs produce meaningful weight loss (-6.2 to -9.5 kg) in patients with both obesity and IBD, suggesting incretin therapy can be used in this complex population without major gastrointestinal safety concerns. However, all included studies were observational, and large-scale RCTs specific to IBD are needed.
