Evaluation of the Efficacy and Safety of the Allurion® Gastric Balloon in 300 Patients from a Single Metabolic Center in Ecuador

Swallowable gastric balloons help Latin American patients lose 14% of body weight without surgery, filling a gap for underrepresented populations.

In 300 Ecuadorian patients with BMI ≥25, the Allurion® swallowable gastric balloon produced mean total weight loss of 14.4% at 12 months with acceptable safety (mostly minor adverse events). This adds real-world Latin American data for a non-surgical obesity intervention in a population underrepresented in prior trials.

Why it surfaced

Real-world Latin American obesity device data. Moderate TWL (~14.4% at 12 months) in a region underrepresented in obesity intervention trials. Single-center retrospective design limits generalizability.
