Metabolomic profiling of exhaled breath condensate identifies a novel biomarker panel for detecting thyroid and breast cancer
Breath metabolites showed promise for non-invasive thyroid and breast cancer detection with reasonable accuracy, though validation in larger samples is needed.
GC-MS analysis of exhaled breath condensate from 74 subjects (65 cancer + 9 controls) identified a multi-metabolite panel with AUC 0.822 for thyroid and 0.783 for breast cancer detection, with 5 metabolites shared across both tumor types. While non-invasive breath-based cancer screening is appealing, the very small control group (n=9) and lack of independent validation severely limit current conclusions.
