Circulating DNA-Markers of High Risk for Lung Cancer in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Blood DNA methylation markers in people with chronic lung disease may signal future lung cancer risk, though findings need larger validation.
In 26 COPD patients, hypermethylation of circulating DNA markers RARB, ZNF260, and DCDC1 was detected by liquid biopsy, with RARB/ZNF260 positivity predicting subsequent lung cancer development in 23% of cases during monitoring. This small study explores cfDNA methylation as an early warning biomarker in a high-risk pre-cancer population, but requires significantly larger validation.
