Near-term implementable finding

Association of common genetic alterations with tumor recurrence in papillary thyroid cancer

Adding genetic testing to thyroid cancer risk assessment catches high-risk patients missed by standard classification, improving personalized management decisions.

In 2,056 PTC patients across 3 centers, RET fusions confer dramatically elevated recurrence risk (HR up to 14x) even in patients classified as low-risk by the 2025 ATA system, while BRAF V600E alone does not independently predict recurrence. Adding molecular profiling to the new ATA stratification framework directly improves precision risk stratification for PTC management.

What the study was

Why it surfaced

Large n=2,056; JNCI; directly improves 2025 ATA risk stratification for PTC by adding RET fusion status — near-term clinical implementation path.
