Development of chimeric antigen receptors targeting the γδ T cell receptor.

Scientists developed CAR-T cells that specifically target rare gamma-delta T-cell cancers without harming normal immune cells.

The NCI team led by Kochenderfer developed CARs targeting the γδ TCR chain, creating a novel tool to selectively eliminate γδ T cell lymphomas and leukemias without off-target effects on conventional αβ T cells. This approach addresses a critical gap in CAR-T development for γδ T cell malignancies, which lack good surface targets that don't also appear on normal T cells, and opens a pathway toward clinical translation.
