Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors and Dementia Risk in Patients With Psychiatric Disorders.
Diabetes drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors show a surprising link to lower dementia risk in people with psychiatric conditions, opening new research directions.
Using a large electronic health record database, this study compared dementia incidence between SGLT2 inhibitor users and non-SGLT2i users among patients with psychiatric disorders and T2DM. Findings revealed a significant association between SGLT2i use and lower dementia risk, representing a potentially important off-target neuroprotective effect requiring prospective confirmation.
