A personalized approach identifies which kidney disease patients actually benefit from steroid treatment versus facing unnecessary side effects, advancing precision anti-inflammatory therapy.
Using multi-cohort data from the international VALIGA, CureGN, NURTuRE, and AI4IgAN consortia, this study applies individualised treatment effect methods to identify which IgA nephropathy patients derive net benefit from corticosteroids—a treatment with significant side effects and heterogeneous clinical efficacy. This precision medicine approach to corticosteroid prescribing addresses a key challenge in IgAN where population-level RCTs obscure individual patient benefit-harm ratios.
