Plasma Protein Biomarkers for Early Detection of Pancreatic Cancer
Two novel blood proteins show promise for catching pancreatic cancer at early stages where it's most treatable, though larger studies must confirm their clinical value.
In a Japanese case-control study of 42 stage I-II pancreatic cancer patients and 43 matched controls, high-throughput proximity extension assay proteomics identified 982 differentially abundant proteins; top candidates CES3 and LILRB4 each achieve AUC=0.91 for early-stage detection, with PPY providing additional localization information. These novel biomarker candidates fill a critical gap in early pancreatic cancer detection where standard biomarkers (CA 19-9) have poor early-stage performance; independent validation is needed.
