In healthy older adults and MCI patients, neuromelanin-sensitive MRI of the locus coeruleus was found to correlate with task-based fMRI episodic memory network activations, suggesting LC degeneration contributes to memory circuit dysfunction in early cognitive decline. These findings position LC integrity as a novel neuroimaging biomarker for early cognitive aging and MCI.
