Ki-67 Expression in megakaryocytes: A new prognostic marker in Myelodysplastic Syndromes

A new bone marrow marker predicts which myelodysplasia patients will progress faster, using cells already examined during standard biopsy.

Evaluation of Ki-67 expression in megakaryocytes from MDS patient bone marrow samples revealed that elevated proliferation index independently predicts prognosis beyond current IPSS-R scoring. This novel pathology-based biomarker is assessable from routine bone marrow biopsies, offering immediate clinical applicability for MDS risk stratification.
