KMT2A-Partial Tandem Duplication Associates With Leukemia Transformation in Myelodysplastic Syndrome

Identifying a specific genetic change in bone marrow cells lets doctors spot which myelodysplastic syndrome patients are heading toward leukemia, so they can intervene earlier.

KMT2A-PTD is an independent predictor of leukemia transformation in MDS; 3-year cumulative incidence was ~50% with KMT2A-PTD versus ~19% without (IWG-PM cohort, P<.001); allogeneic HSCT significantly reduced both transformation risk and cumulative relapse incidence (17.6% vs 100%, P<.001).
