Association of Peri-procedural Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Exposure with Long-Term Outcomes After Carotid Artery Revascularization Procedures: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis
Patients on GLP-1 drugs appear to have lower stroke and death rates after carotid surgery, suggesting these diabetes medications may protect blood vessels beyond their known benefits.
A propensity score-matched retrospective cohort analysis of real-world TriNetX data found peri-procedural GLP-1RA exposure was associated with significantly lower 5-year ischemic stroke risk after carotid artery stenting (HR 0.436) and carotid endarterectomy (HR 0.533), as well as reduced all-cause mortality after both procedures. These hypothesis-generating results from 443-633 matched patients per arm per procedure suggest a potential cerebrovascular protective effect of GLP-1RAs beyond their established metabolic indication.
